A Brief History of Cupping Therapy
Cupping therapy is one of the oldest healing practices in the world, with its roots traced back to ancient Egyptian, Chinese, Unani, and Ayurvedic systems. Evidence of cupping has been found in ancient texts like the Ebers Papyrus (1550 BCE) from Egypt and the works of Hippocrates in Greece.
In Ayurveda, cupping is known as “Rakta Mokshana” — one of the five therapeutic detoxification methods (Panchakarma), used to remove impure blood (dushta rakta) and toxins from the body. The use of animal horns or bamboo in early Ayurvedic practice eventually evolved into glass, silicone, and fire-based cups used today.
At Manioveda, we bring this powerful ancient therapy into the modern age — blending it with Ayurvedic principles and personalized protocols for spine, joint, skin, and women’s health concerns.

Types Of Cupping Therapies

This is the most commonly used form of cupping. In Dry Cupping, special cups are applied on specific points of the body to create vacuum suction on the skin. This suction pulls the skin and underlying tissues upward, which increases local blood flow, loosens tight muscles, and promotes cellular repair.
Best for:
Back pain, shoulder stiffness, general fatigue, joint pain, and myofascial tightness.

In Wet Cupping, tiny superficial incisions or pricks are made on the skin after dry cupping. Then the cup is reapplied to draw out stagnant or impure blood from the site. This is based on the Ayurvedic concept of removing dushta rakta (vitiated blood) to restore balance and health.
Best for:
Skin issues (acne, eczema), headaches, frozen shoulder, chronic inflammation, and painful joints.

In this traditional technique, a flame is briefly placed inside a glass cup to create heat and vacuum. The cup is then quickly placed on the skin, where the suction pulls the skin up. The heat helps open channels, improve circulation, and deeply relax stiff tissues.
Best for:
Severe back pain, muscle spasms, cold-induced stiffness, chronic respiratory issues.

Here, cups are placed on the skin with medicated oil and gently glided over muscles and fascia to create a massage-like effect. This technique enhances lymphatic drainage, reduces puffiness, and improves circulation over large muscle areas.
Best for:
Back pain, shoulder stiffness, general fatigue, joint pain, and myofascial tightness.

This is a gentle and non-invasive technique using soft silicone cups on the face. It increases microcirculation, helps in lymphatic drainage, and promotes collagen production naturally. No marks or bruising is left behind.
Best for:
Anti-aging care, dull skin, under-eye puffiness, jaw tension, and pigmentation.
